This was a huge National Competition and it has grown immensely in the three years since I last competed, but at 63 I still pulled out 2nd place at this huge event. It has undoubtedly inspired me to keep going, work harder — and be stronger — to be an even better me!

I may not get first every time, but every time I learn something new, grow as an individual and I am happy with how far I’ve come.

My message to YOU is… Believe you can achieve your goals and capture your dreams if you strive to be better no matter what your age, what problems you’ve faced or what obstacles stand in your way. Dare to risk that which you feel impossible and be rewarded handsomely!

Try out the combo move that Marc and I did. It’s four moves in one. It will test your endurance; work your upper body, your lower body, and your core.

Here’s how to do it!

a. You’re going to squat, come up, jump left, jump right and shoulder press. That counts as 1 rep. Do 10 reps.

Next without stopping…

b. Go into pushup position with weights in hand and alternate doing a right arm row, left arm row and a pushup. That is 1 rep. Do 10 reps.

Now just repeat (a & b) on the other side by jumping right, then jump left with shoulder press and so on. That counts as 1 set. Work up to doing three sets.

That’s it!

If you are a beginner, start with only one move and then move on but finish strong.

Overall, just have fun with it! That’s the key! That’s what I do!

Then just dance like nobody’s watching! ☺

wendy-familyTalk about health…I want to pay special tribute to your healthy relationship with mom on Mother’s Day.

Most moms do the best they can with what they know…and when they know more, they do better. Recognize that mothers are not perfect and understand that they are people too. In other words, they are more than just your mother. They are individuals who have their own personal thoughts, feelings and things they have to deal with on a regular basis.

In addition, they play a part in the lives of others too. They are somebody’s sister, wife, cousin, daughter and lover (I know this one is hard to think of when it comes to your mother, but it’s true ☺). So they deserve not only a break, but also applause and appreciation because anyone who IS a mother knows it’s the hardest job in the world.

Just like a momma bear we yearn to protect our babies. Of course I’m talking about myself now. As a mom I know I have done my best with the skills I have had. I have always thought of my kids first and would never ever have abandoned them. Once I had them I was invested for the long haul no matter what. It was them first or there was no me. This makes me weep as I think about it because they mean so much to me. I am proud of my two grown up babies.

Then I think of my own mommy and how I was such a rebel growing up. I think of how tough it must have been for her to handle four daughters and a son. We didn’t have much, but nonetheless I remember those mayonnaise sandwiches were so good! Yes, times were rough, but we survived. I fast forward to now as I long for her to be here with me again so I can hold her hand and tell her I love her and see her look back at me and say, “I am so proud of you Wendy.” That visualization makes me weep more. I often think of old times with her — funny times too and missed opportunities. I’ll never forget the words Mommy always repeated to us before her untimely passing, “Give me my flowers while I can smell them.”

Seize those precious moments with your Mother and make them last I tell you. Make them memorable and it will sustain you in a positive way for the rest of your life. Laugh, learn and make special plans together. Let those times become traditional rituals that can’t be ignored and can be recreated and passed down through your family line throughout the years. Create and share healthy regimens and healthy lifestyle habits so you can enjoy each others physical presence as long as possible.

Overall, understand that it is always important to capture that special moment with mom by saying: “I love you,” but remember talk without the walk is cheap. So follow through and walk your talk baby and you will never regret it!

Wendy’s Fit Fax Tips!

To build a healthy relationship with mom or anyone else in your family try the following:

  1. Spend some special time together. Workout together, take in a movie and try a new restaurant that specializes in healthy meals. Designate a certain day of the week or month in perpetuity to have this time for only you and mom.
  2. Build a genuine level of respect. Show mom that you appreciate and support her and sympathize with her. Entertain her ideas and help out with the little things. Give her a word of encouragement, compliment her and show her she is loved.
  3. Let bygones be bygones. Forget about holding grudges and for any misunderstandings you and she might have had. Try to put yourself in her place to understand what stresses she may have experienced in her life and why she made some past decisions. With love and compassion help her to see how you saw things from your minds eye and perspective as a kid.

I just want to know one thing. Do you have your beach body ready yet or are you still hiding? If you are hiding, not to worry! There is still time and still hope if you are willing to buckle down. Above all, don’t stress because there’s one thing I know for sure and that is…stress will assist you in body fat retention and pack on the pounds. Who needs that these days, right?

Instead reawaken your mind, search your soul and get in tune with your body to see the big picture…but focus on the small steps that will get you there.

To keep yourself in check and stay motivated, use the magic of visualization. Hang a poster up in your bedroom or bathroom that shows a reformed picture of the new you (how you envision yourself when you reach your goals). Hang a bikini next to it. Make sure the bikini is the size you aspire to be.

The other thing that is extremely important in this equation is figure out what your purpose or reason is for wanting to change your life. Watch out because this has got to be a good one! What I am saying is, you have to have a higher purpose in order to make progress and stay focused or the magic won’t stick. Just like every other time you did the yo-yo dance, that’s what you will keep doing unless you have a genuinely good reason for wanting to change your life. Then jot that reason down on your poster and view it everyday to stay on track.

This is just for starters folks. I could write about this all day long. But I can better show you and coach you through this also.

Seeing it is one part — achieving it is the other. You don’t have to do it alone.

Keep your mind on the body you want for the beach. But also focus on activities you love, begin replacing bad foods for healthier ones and find the support you need to succeed if you can’t do it on your own to insure your success.

Better late than never. Now is the time to get to work to make it happen. Are you in? Let’s go then, ’cause it’s crunch time baby!

The truth is life happens and there is always going to be a certain amount of stress in your life, but its how you manage it’s how you manage it that counts. Here’s what I do:

  1. The truth is…I find something to laugh at everyday — movies, standup comedy and sometimes I am my own comedy. I can get sill and funny too with the things I create. Let’s just say, I like to keep things interesting.
  2. The truth is…I don’t hold grudges. It ain’t that serious, I always say. Life is too short. Grudges only harden your heart and decay your soul.
  3. The truth is…Resolve your issues. Forgive your past and forgive yourself. Say what you feel and mean what you say. Unresolved issues are like a growing disease or inferno that one day will combust and destroy you.

Val Day#3-2015Can I be your Valentine? Is that what I hear you saying right now…I mean this time of year? Sure! Why not? It is said in so many different ways and different languages that it can be infectious. It’s in the media, it’s in all the special Valentine’s Day sales, and it’s in all the chatter with people buying up special gifts and participating in special ceremonies.

This is a day to honor the loves in our lives (so they say) and more than any other day people are sharing love and making babies. The fact is… We all need love and want love on this day; on any day and every day we crave it.

We all want a soul mate right? Well think about this. How about being your own soul mate first? How about starting out with some self-love?  Although I am now known as America’s #1 expert on looking Fit, Fierce & Fabulous after 40, the truth is, I used to be one of those people too who didn’t love themselves and I know there are still too many people who don’t love themselves or their bodies.  As a coach I hear about it all the time.

Think of it this way. This is a day to honor your body, your spirit, and your livelihood first before you can turn to the loves of your lives. Who is more deserving of your love than you yourself?

Self-love is sexy! You know why? When you love yourself others can see it, and they are drawn like a magnet to you. Work on you so you feel good about you. Work on your body so you love your body and as a result you will love your life and prosper.

Even without being a doctor or health industry professional, it’s not hard to understand eating-too-muchthe relationship between overeating and health disorders. It’s easy to look around during your day and find evidence of the nation’s growing obesity epidemic to understand what happens when you over consume in general. On a smaller scale we wonder about the over consumption of just certain kinds of foods? What happens when you overdo it with sweets?

  • Sugar: There are all kinds of health issues related to over consumption of sugar. Diabetes would be the number one health concern. But, diabetes is not the only ill effect from over consumption of sugar. Obesity, thyroid dysfunction, kidney malfunction, and intestinal problems can all be directly associated with too much sugar consumption.
  • Alcohol: What about too much alcohol? The ravaging effects of alcoholism are a continual struggle and medical expense to many companies and citizens in this country, and indeed the whole world. Lost youth, liver problems, brain deterioration, the speeding of other age-related diseases are all side affects of too much alcohol consumption.
  • Malnutrition: Then, we can talk about the effects of eating too little. What happens when we do not consume what we need to maintain our health? Gum disease, heart disease, muscle deterioration, vision loss, and anorexia occur when we do not get the necessary food our body needs.

One Solution

To remedy the imbalances in our nutrition, you can take supplements. Even when we can’t consume enough actual food, we can supplement the vitamins and minerals our bodies need in order to maintain some healthy functioning. You have only to walk down the aisle at your local supermarket or pharmacy to discover that there has been a vitamin revolution. Every possible vitamin and mineral needed by the body is available in capsule, pill, tablet, or powder form.

Once your body has reached the point of unhealthy function, or you have placed such a strain on your body from over consumption that one of the related diseases has taken hold, it’s almost impossible to correct one problem without creating another. Once you have become a diabetic, there are so many complications, that simply choosing to diet and exercise is no longer an option. The health concerns you now have far outweigh the easy solution of diet and exercise. Can you begin to see how important maintaining your health is to your quality of life and how important it is to the lives of your loved ones? Your choices directly affect their quality of life too. Make every effort to maintain your health. You owe it to your children and other family and especially yourself.

A true body detoxification will really benefit your overall health, and it is a practice that I recommend everyone engage in. There are plenty of unknown ingredients that we come in contact with, on a daily basis, that work to destroy our bodies. Whether we know it or not, we are all victims and offenders of this harm to our bodies. On the flip side, though, there are several ways one can overcome these negative effects.  Below, I offer insight to the objectives of detoxification, and the key rewards it delivers.

Objectives of Detoxification: Our body’s main detoxification organs and systems are the liver, colon, kidneys, gallbladder, lungs, skin, lymph, and blood. They help rid the body of waste and toxins. However, our systems were designed when the world was a less polluted place. Nowadays, with a much more toxic and polluted world, our bodies are forced to work a lot harder to rid the exponentially increased waste and toxins. Once upon a time, most toxins were still from a natural source. Unfortunately, there are many man made substances that shock our systems even further.

Here’s a scenario: Imagine overworked employers who are not provided with enough food to sustain their energy and focus. This would definitely tire them out and their efficient and effective work performance will drop. This leads to work not completed on schedule or even worse – undone. We are treating our organs the same way when we don’t offer them the break they need or provide them with the proper nutrition to function at their best. This is where detoxification comes in.

Benefits of Detoxification:

  1. Cleaner Organs: Another major effect of a detoxification process is that our organs will be cleaner. Not many people think about the fact that our colon, kidneys, liver, as well as many of the other organs we have, do rigorous work day in and day out.
  2. Clears The Mind: Once our physical bodies become detoxified then our mind becomes clear and we can think and engage in mental activity better than we could before. All of these things will help us do whatever work we need to engage in throughout the week.
  3. Overcome Body Odor: Many people don’t realize that body odor can indicate the need for cleansing and detoxification is able to overcome it. Certain fragrances and deodorants can mask the problem but through cleansing, you can remove the problem from the inside out.

Besides the above mentioned key benefits, there are several other benefits of detoxification. Here are a few:

  • Reform your lifestyle addictions to sugar, salt, high glycemic carbohydrates, alcohol, junk foods, nicotine, etc
  • You purify your blood
  • It improves your Immune function
  • Cleansing scavenges free radicals and eliminates toxins.  It strengthens your body’s fight against cancer cells and generates healthy cells in your body
  • You cleanse mucous, congestion, fermentation and inflammation in your digestive tract

All these benefits are yours for the taking. Just remember, every now and then, just like cars, humans need a tune up to run efficiently. There are several detox methods out there. It’s usually a great idea to consult a physician before any intense change in your diet or routine. Also, if you experience pain or nausea during a cleanse, discontinue it immediately and consult your doctor. Whatever you do, or however you do it, cleansing your system is a must.

Pregnancy is a sensitive issues when it comes to women and fitness. Weight consciousPregnant Excerise Advice women tend to become even more conscious when they experience their body change. Not wanting to gain weight, they start working out — and sometimes without even consulting their doctor. Not consulting your physician and exercising during pregnancy can do more harm than good. So if you or someone you care about is thinking of implementing a work out routine during pregnancy, it is highly advised to consult your doctor to avoid any complications during pregnancy. Below are a few activities a woman should avoid during pregnancy.


  1. Exercises that involve lying or standing for a long time: After the first trimester, exercises such as sit-ups which involve lying on the back for a longtime should cease. Also activities that involve standing motionless should be discontinued until after the pregnancy. These activities decrease the flow of blood to uterus and also drop your heart rate.
  2. Exercises that impact breathing: Women, who are used to lifting light weights previously, can continue during pregnancy. But heavy lifting is prohibited. This type of strain disrupts breathing and irregularity in breathing directly affects the oxygen supply to your baby. Similarly, scuba diving is probably not a good idea either.
  3. Exercise with a risk of falling: Women who have been working out regularly before pregnancy, should re-consider their exercise routine. All activities that have a risk of falling down should be avoided. For instance, biking, skiing and horseback riding should be strictly avoided because of the high risk.
  4. Activities which can cause Trauma: Activities with flying objects or sports with the possibility of blunt contact are not for pregnant women. It is definitely better to be a distant and shielded spectator during these events. One can never be too cautious in situations that risk accidental impact on the abdominal area. So ladies let me say this loud and clear – “No more roller derby for you for a while!”
  5. Avoid exercise in hot climate: Heat and humidity can cause Mommy to overheat. Your rising body temperature is dangerous for the baby. Ask your doctor but he/she should tell you the limits on your heart rate range during pregnancy. Each woman is different.
  6. High Altitudes: Exercising at high altitudes above 6000ft during pregnancy is not advised because it reduces the oxygen flow to your baby.
  7. High impact Movement: Activities that involve bouncing, jerking and twisting should be avoided. A pregnant woman’s joints naturally loosen up as her body prepares for child birth. These activities could cause the joints to strain, making them more prone to injury.

Once again, it is strictly advised that you consult your physician before committing to any kind of exercise during your pregnancy. The effects vary from female to female, an exercise which one could do with ease, can prove to be harmful for another. You and your baby’s reactions are connected to factors such as physique, genetics, and medical history of the female. So relax ladies! Your doctor will let you know what type of gain is normal and tell you some exercises that are healthy for you during this process. Congratulations to all the New Mommies and babies!

Ever seen someone go through a crisis in their life?  Whether it was from the death of a loved one, lovesick from a breakup or someone returning from jail, the worries and woes that plague your mind and cause stress in your life can cause premature aging, disease and even death.  In order to perform and survive the normal activities in today’s world it is necessary to go to another level and find a vessel where you can find inner peace and tranquility of mind.  One of the best ways to achieve this today is through meditation. Although it’s been around for ages, more and more people are catching on and realizing its powerful benefits.

Stress Reduction

If you meditate for 10 to 15 minutes a day in a quiet environment it will lower your blood pressure, relax restricted veins and bring you a peace of mind that you never knew before.  As a result you will become a better decision maker.


Man has stepped on the moon, conquered Mount Everest and gone deep into the core of the earth, but what man has not been able to do is to control his own mind. The mind is key to everything.  If controlled rightly it gives birth to positive thoughts and if let loose it produces negative thoughts. Meditation promotes a positive thought process and helps to control your mind over what really matters.

Patience and Perspective

Some things in life irritate us on a regular basis and make us desperate.  It happens to all of us.  You get annoyed when you have to stand in line, or you have little patience behind the wheel of your car at the signal. Meditation allows you to see a different perspective and creates a balance within you.

Clarity and Concentration

You cannot achieve success in life without concentration. Until you have your mind and heart focused on where you’re headed, you cannot perform at your optimum level.  Meditation gives you clarity and concentration to see things through.

It is quite difficult to explain the power of meditation, because it involves a certain level of consciousness, which can’t be put in the form of words. The above-mentioned benefits of meditation are real. Nevertheless, the key factor that predicts the outcome of meditation is perseverance. The more consistent you are in your meditation, the more you will achieve inner peace and control which will help you discover new horizons.

Still got the habit of late night eating?

Since late night eating is such a tough habit to conquer and has such devastating effects I thought more alternatives were in order. Don’t try to overdo anything just keep it simple and remember that the ultimate goal is to avoid and resist the tempting habit of late night munchies. Practice makes perfect!

Alternatives: If you still can’t resist the cravings, then wean yourself slowly by replacing snacking or unhealthy foods with some low cal foods. You can sip on a cup of low calorie, no caffeine herbal tea that will sooth your stomach, eat a small salad or maybe a piece of fruit. But junk food is strictly a no go!

Importance of Breakfast: Most people don’t realize the importance of breakfast and therefore tend to skip it regularly.  Research has proven that people who skip breakfast are more prone to eating high calorie foods at night as compared to those who eat breakfast.
